What is JROTC?

 

JROTC is a a cooperative effort between the U.S. military and high schools to provide a character-development and citizenship programs. It's led by retired military personnel who serve as instructors. The program's core curriculum includes leadership, civics, health, wellness, and military history. Students participate in physical training, drills, and community service projects. It's important to note that joining JROTC does not obligate a student to military service.

Goose Creek Memorial High School: Marine Corps JROTC

 

The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (MCJROTC) at Goose Creek Memorial High School is a leadership-focused program designed to instill values of honor, courage, and commitment. The curriculum is centered on five key categories: Leadership, Citizenship, Personal Growth and Responsibility, Public Service and Career Exploration, and General Military Subjects.

Students in the MCJROTC program at Goose Creek Memorial develop practical skills and a sense of responsibility through a variety of in-class activities and lessons, which include:

  • Drill and Ceremonies: Learning and executing precise marching movements and military ceremonies.

  • Physical Training: Engaging in activities that promote physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

  • Leadership Education: Studying and practicing leadership principles to prepare for future roles.

  • Citizenship: Understanding the rights, responsibilities, and duties of being an American citizen.

  • Military History: Gaining a deeper appreciation for military traditions and history.

This program provides a unique opportunity for students to develop self-confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of community while preparing them for future success in any field.

Sterling High School: Army NDCC

 

The Army National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) at Sterling High School is a character and leadership development program that operates similarly to a JROTC program.

Students at Sterling High School in the Army NDCC program focus on the Army's core values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. The curriculum, known as Leadership Education & Training (LET), is a progressive program that emphasizes critical thinking, academic achievement, and leadership development.

Program activities are designed to be hands-on and include:

  • Leadership Labs: Practical exercises that allow cadets to apply leadership principles and practice command.

  • Drill and Ceremonies: Teaches precision and teamwork through military formations and ceremonies.

  • Physical Training: Enhances physical fitness and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

  • Community Service Projects: Instills a sense of civic duty through organized volunteer work.

The NDCC provides Sterling students with the opportunity to gain valuable life skills and a sense of purpose, regardless of their post-graduation plans.

High School Options Application

 

Both the Goose Creek Memorial MCJROTC and the Sterling Army NDCC programs are now included in the High School Options application. Starting with the Class of 2030, students interested in joining either program must apply through the district's High School Options process. This ensures all interested students have an equal opportunity to be a part of these incredible programs.
